Snow Leopard Automatic Text Correction
I’ve noticed this today and I figured it was worth mentioning: Snow Leopard supports automatic inline correction of words in some applications designed to utilize it, such as Mail and TextEdit. This is kind of neat except that it can make corrections you don’t want.
As an example, I’m doing a lot of domain stuff today, and dealing with our registrar of choice, eNom – except that if I type their name in lowercase (‘enom’) SL automatically corrects it to ‘enema’, which means I’ve been inches away from sending horrendously confusing and potentially inappropriate e-mails to people.
Maybe it’s something to watch out for. It’s nearly screwed me a few times.
[Update: Patrick Armstrong pointed out that when I pasted the text for this blog post into Wordpress's admin area, Snow Leopard got me again – changing the first occurrence of 'enom' (in parentheses) into 'enema', which I've now fixed. Can't catch a break today.]

This post made me so happy. You have absolutely no idea.
I’ve been thinking of upgrading, and this may be a deciding factor for me. I’d love auto-correct. Is there not a way to train it, like on the iPhone?

Well, you could add words to the spelling dictionary, sure. It won’t correct a correct word. The replacement is pretty subtle though, so you have to be careful and pay attention at the start. Not my cup of tea.
